Program II - The Nutcracker |
Music: Tchaikovsky, Choreography: Vladimir Issaev |
In December, we perform The Nutcracker, the seasonal favorite and perhaps the best-known Russian ballet. With an enhanced production our audiences will enjoy Arts Ballet journey to the “Land of the Sweets.
The family, holiday tradition continues for the enjoyment of children and adults!
This traditional ballet is performed every year by Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida to Tchaikovsky’s popular score based on the tale of Ernest Hoffman. Not only it is the most popular ballet enjoyed by all audiences around the world during this time of the year but it also serves as an introduction to ballet to the very young audiences. Issaev’s choreography preserves the Russian tradition. With his version as an alternative to those who already have seen Balanchine’s version |

The Story
It is based on the book called "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" written by E.T.A. Hoffman. In 1891, the legendary choreographer Marius Petipa commissioned Tchaikovsky to write the music for the Nutcracker Ballet. In 1892, the first showing of the Nutcracker took place at the Mariinsky Theatre of Russia, home of the Kirov Ballet What is seen on the stage today has changed much from the original story of a little girl named Marie in a loveless household fighting bloody battles against a mouse king with seven heads.
Marie’s name has been now changed to Clara and her loving parents celebrate her birthday on Christmas Eve.
Her Godfather Herr Drosselmeyer brings her a Nutcracker as a present to her party and she fells in love with her new toy. |
When she falls asleep she dreams of fights against soldiers and mice and The Nutcracker becomes her prince who takes her to the Kingdom of Snow and later to the Kingdom of Sweets.
Snow Queen, Dew Drop Fairy and Sugarplum Fairy introduce Clara to unimaginable characters representing the world of sweets, fantasy and love. |
